New BUGE - 'Exploring the Digital Age' (SP5, 2008)

Contemporary social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook will come under the spotlight as part of a new BUGE being launched 'Exploring the Digital Age'.

The course, being run by CIS Course Coordinator Adam Jenkins (pictured), will mark new territory for the University in applying academic principles and the teaching of increasingly popular digital technologies and associated 'phenomena'.

It will be offered for the first time as of this forthcoming Study Period 5 (from July 2008).

Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in such topics as From Grues to Orcish Hordes: The History of Massively Multiplayer Games; Virtual Worlds and Virtual Lives; and The Hacker Culture, just to name a few.

Further, an online 'coolness survey' will give students the opportunity to vote on topics covered in the course that they enjoy or would like featured in more detail, as well as nominating topics that interest them

Adam Jenkins says the course will "chart a path" through the use of new technology covering topics "hands-on" and from a largely non-technical perspective.

"We'll be looking at a number of technologies that are impacting our lives, and at many which may (or may not) be impacting us in the future," he said.

"You don't need to be a geek or computer programmer to be impacted by what is happening, so you shouldn't need to be one to understand it either. We want people involved from a variety of perspectives who can bring their own ideas and interpretations to the material being covered."

The BUGE is open to all first, second and third year students in the University of South Australia, particularly, encouraging those currently studying a non-traditional IT program who may wish to build their knowledge in this area.

It will be offered at the UniSA City West Campus in RR 5-09 to be run over two hours from 6pm until 8pm commencing Wednesday, July 30.

Course detail and further information is available through the 'Exploring the Digital Age' course homepage. Students looking to enrol are asked to refer to the Enrol Online website for further details and to join this exciting new course.
