Sun Microsystems Ambassador 'one of our own'

BY STEPHANIE BOLTJE

BIS Masters student Sarah Grevins has been selected as a Sun Microsystems Campus Ambassador for 2008.

She will represent and promote Sun Microsystems to students, academics and researchers within the University of South Australia through campus demonstrations and online communication.

The unique role will assist Sun Microsystems in meeting demand for open source technologies on campus, as well as providing free web-based training, developer tools and technical support via forums and communities to student developers.

“My preference to study at the University of South Australia was based on the course options, the industry relevance and the opportunities available to students. The Sun Microsystems Campus Ambassador is one such opportunity that has arisen from my studies,” said Sarah in light of her appointment.

“Not only has BIS provided me with relevant industry experience, but a reputation for creating young professionals ready to take on the real world.”

Sun Microsystems Industry Account Manager Mr Glen Donhardt was pleased with Sarah’s appointment, consolidating the strong relationship Sun Microsystems has enjoyed with the School of Computer and Information Science for over 10 years.

“In 2007, Jonathan Schwartz, President and CEO for Sun Microsystems committed further investment in education by funding 500 Campus Ambassador positions globally,” he said.

“Locally, Sun Microsystems had been discussing the possibility of a Campus Ambassador for the University with Professor Andy Koronios and Mr Allan Baird and it’s great we now have Sarah on board.”

IAP Manager: Student Development Dr Chris Nettle said Sarah was a “stand-out nomination” due to her exemplary academic results in courses relevant to Sun Microsystems.

Sun Microsystems (sun.com) has 33,904 employees worldwide aiming to provide ‘network computing infrastructure solutions’ such as Java, NetBeans, Open Solaris and Open SPARC.

The Sun Campus Ambassador Program has met with huge success and now boasts more than 180 Campus Ambassadors in more than 30 countries.
